Instead, Nora embarks on a desperate journey away from home. When his father leaves his beloved Mexico in search of work, Nora is left behind. She struggles to make sense of their loss, while living in poverty, waiting for the return of his father and a better day. When the cards and money stop coming, Nora decides that she and and her mother have to go look at Texas. After a frightening experience when crossing the border, the two are alone in a strange place. Now, Nora must find the strength to survive, while suffering such small comforts: friends, a new school, and her beautiful quince.
